Special Secrets From Pre-Searing Ascalon

1) The Bear Hunt "Quest"
2) Farmer Dirk's Prize-Winning hogs
3) Get Rid of Your Pet/rename your pet
4) Upgrade Your Armor

1) Though not a proper quest in and of itself, you can take part in
a timed mission in which you have to kill a bear in under three
minutes in order to get a special object in the game. In order to
get this mission, you need to find the group of hunters who are
in a wooded area near Fort Ranik.

If you leave from the Fort, head towards the road that would take
you back through Regent Valley and eventually to the town of Ashford.
You'll need to travel up the grass path on the hill next to the road,
close to where the Skale Broodcallers hang out. Travel in a westerly
direction and come down the hill. You should run into two bears and
a spider on the other side - you can kill the spider if necessary,
but try to avoid the bears if at all possible.

Continue west for a few seconds, and you should see the hunters and
Hatcher, the collector who also resides in Fort Ranik. To unlock the
mission click on one of the hunter's and wait for them to finish their
conversation. Once the timer appears in the upper part of your screen,
head back to the bears and kill one. Return to the hunter's and they
should automatically respond (if not, just click one again). As your
reward, you will get a vial of Hunter's Ale.

Should you be tempted to use the Hunter's Ale, you will find it gives
your character a special "outlook" on the world for a time.

2) Like the Bear Hunt mission, there's also a little extra "quest" in
Pre-Searing that you can do for some amusement, and extra gold. When
you head into the town of Ashford, you'll notice a lot of "Prize-
Winning hogs" roaming around, with Farmer Dirk tearing his hair out
trying to call them back into their pen. While you can attempt to round
up the hogs and get them back in the pen solo, it's easier to have
a teammate or Gwen aid you. With Gwen simply have her stand near the
gate so the hogs you herd back into the pen won't run out while you're
rounding up another one. If you successfully get them all back,
Farmer Dirk will give you 25 gold pieces for the effort.

You simply need to run after the hogs and try to direct them where you
want to go - the Ranger Tame Animal spell will not work, you need to
physically run around until you can direct the hogs into their pen.

3) Don't like the pet you currently have? If you go to Jarrel the Tamer
who hangs out in Regent Valley next to Master Ranger Nente, close the
the road leading from Ashford, he will be happy to take the animal off
your hands for you. As long as your pet is alive, you will be able to
talk to Jarrel, and then let him take your pet, leaving you free to
head out and tame another one.

You can also rename your pet at any time, just by typing /namepet (or
/petname) in the chat dialog box, followed the name you want for your
pet. To remove any name you gave your pet and return it to the default
identification, use the /petname (or/namepet) command and hit enter
without typing a name.

4) One of the most important steps you will need to take prior to
entering the Academy and advancing to the Post-Searing portion of Guild
Wars is to upgrade the starter armor your character begins life with
in the Tutorial (Pre-Searing) world. Throughout your travels, you will
encounter several collectors who are willing to trade with you for the
armor you need. What follows is who the collectors are, what they have,
and what you need to give them.

As a special note, as of the last update to the game (June 1, 2005), there
are still no collectors that you can trade with to get Mesmer gloves,
or Elementalist and Necromancer Torso/Chest pieces, nor are there any
upgrades to the head armor. The beltpouch is the only storage upgrade
available in Pre-Searing. More storage options open up once you advance
you character through the Academy - but there are still no Guild Wide
storage options - only account wide storage.

**In one of the updates since the above note, the Elementalist, Necro,
and Mesmer missing armor upgrades are now available from collectors.
There still is no headgear upgrade for any profession in Pre-Searing
(as of 1/10/06).
